About the Anglesea Area

Situated on the Great Ocean Road, Anglesea is nested between the Victorian coastal towns of Torquay and Aireys Inlet on the mouth of Anglesea River.

The town of Anglesea is a significant town on the Great Ocean Road. It is further west of Torquay at the start of the great Ocean Road in Victoria’s South West.

Anglesea has fantastic surf beaches and patrolled swimming beaches. Anglesea is a popular tourist resort surrounded by both forest and beach scenery. The vast expanse of sand around the mouth of the Angelsea River is a popular beach for tourists and local swimmers.

Anglesea beach provides both shallow water for children and good waves for board and body surfing. Sand dunes and surrounding bush have much to offer the naturalist and bush lover. From August to November, the surrounding hills are ablaze with colourful wildflowers.

Other scenic spots along the coast include the rocky Point Roadknight and the lookouts off Harvey Street and the Great Ocean Road above the town's main surf beach.
Anglesea is surrounded by attractive parks and gardens along the coastal foreshore and the Anglesea River. Coogoorah Park at the end of River Reserve Road features a network of islands linked by board-walks and bridges through wetlands.

Just north-east of Anglesea is Point Addis where rugged sandstone cliffs overlook a marine national park. Below the cliff top is an ideal surfing spot while the cliff is a popular place for hang gliders.

Anglesea is home to the Alcoa Open Cut Mine which uses locally harvested coal to generate electricity. There are lookouts near the power station and across the open cut mine.
